CE appeals to public in virus fight as HK sees 106 new cases

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 106 coronavirus cases on Tuesday, a drop from Monday's record single-day high of 145 but still topped 100 for the seventh day in a row, as the city's leader appealed to the public for their cooperation in the fight against the pandemic.

Ninety-eight of the 106 cases were locally transmitted and 50 of which were untraceable, said health officials at a daily news briefing in the afternoon.

The latest cases brought Hong Kong's infection tally to 2,884.

Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Center for Health Protection's Communicable Disease Branch, said that there were also 85 preliminary confirmed cases.

In a video appeal released on Tuesday evening, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor called on members of the public to follow strictly the social distancing measures and stay at home as far as possible to fight the new wave of COVID-19 infections.

She added that the central government is helping Hong Kong to enhance its testing capability and set up a community treatment facility.

The Hospital Authority said 1,100 patients are hospitalized, including 40 in critical condition. Two patients died during the past 24 hours, bringing the total deaths to 22.

Given the grave situation, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government announced on Monday a string of stringent anti-disease measures.

Starting from Wednesday, dining-in services in restaurants will be prohibited and mask-wearing will be compulsory in all public places, both indoors and outdoors. Group gatherings will be limited to no more than two people.
