HK youth: NSL restores stability, ensures effective governance

The National Security Law for Hong Kong has played a pivotal role in enabling Hong Kong to move from chaos to stability and prosperity without compromising on the protection of human rights, a young representative for the city told a UN Human Rights Council meeting on Wednesday.

Delivering a video-recorded speech at the 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Gary Wong Chi-him, a board member of the Chinese Association of Hong Kong and Macao Studies and a board member of the United Nations Association of China, urged “some scaremongers who vilifying the National Security Law” to stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and spend more time improving their own human rights situation.

Three years after the implementation of National Security Law, Hong Kong has restored stability and has effective governance, Wong said.

Wong also observed that, given the city’s unique strengths and with the staunch support of the central government, Hong Kong is integrating with national development and is roaring back to the center of the global stage.

 “The signing of 13 MOUs during Hong Kong’s recent mission to the Middle East is an excellent showcase of Hong Kong’s return to the global stage, ushering in a new chapter for Hong Kong,” Wong said.

He added that global talents and companies are moving to Hong Kong. Sporting and cultural activities are making a comeback, tourism is recovering and new business opportunities are emerging.

“This is the real Hong Kong, a peaceful city with confidence, dynamism, vitality and a ‘Lion Rock spirit’ ready to connect the East and West and make the world a better place,” Wong concluded.
