Political fanatics exploit their hapless ‘brothers’

Assisted by members of the opposition camp, relatives of the 12 fugitives who were arrested by mainland authorities for illegal entry held a press conference outside the Hong Kong police headquarters on Sunday, in another attempt to put pressure on the special administrative region government to secure their return.

It was revealed earlier that some of those families had contracted lawyers for this case. Conceivably, they must have been informed by their lawyers that mainland authorities have full jurisdiction over the fugitives, who were caught in mainland waters and have been detained for illegal entry on their way to Taiwan late last month. They must also be aware that the SAR government can in no way interfere with the legal process on the mainland, not to mention demanding the release and return of the detainees without first completing the legal process on the mainland.

Lawmakers from the opposition camp, of whom some are lawyers or have a strong legal knowledge, have egged on family members of the fugitives to insist on such unreasonable demands and assisted them to hold two high-profile press conferences so far, despite knowing that the SAR government’s hands are tied.

Obviously, the political fanatics in the opposition camp know very well they can in no way help the families of the detainees. They are merely trying to launch another hate-mongering campaign with groundless accusations against the mainland authorities and the SAR government, aimed at driving a wedge between Hong Kong residents and the central government.

The political zealots have not accepted defeat in the yearlong anti-government campaign, which subsided after the promulgation of the National Security Law in the SAR. They will not let go of any opportunity to rejuvenate their political campaign. Like the Universal Community Testing Programme initiated by the SAR government, the arrest and detention of the fugitives by mainland authorities has been exploited as a rallying point to rekindle the zealots’ anti-government campaign.

Those detainees have been brainwashed to do the criminal bidding of the opposition camp during the “black revolution”. They ended up on the wrong side of the law and are due to bear the consequences of their illegal acts. They have been used as pawns in the anti-government campaign and are being milked for whatever is left of their worth today.
