HK sees 8 new infections, mass testing finds 6 positive cases

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported eight new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, including seven local cases, bringing the city's infection tally to 4,838. 

Health authorities on Thursday also announced that initial results from the universal community testing program uncovered six positive cases.

The origin of four of the seven locally transmitted cases was untraceable, said health officials at a briefing in the afternoon. 

As of 8 pm, about 884,000 residents have signed up for the free testing and some 470,000 have finished their tests

The four untraced cases involved a 63-year-old man who lived and worked in Yau Ma Tei, a 74-year-old woman living in Ho Man Tin, a 62-year-old woman residing in Wong Tai Sin and a deceased patient whose remains tested positive.

As of 2 pm Thursday, six people have tested positive in the city’s universal coronavirus testing that started on Tuesday. They were not included in Thursday’s count.

Four of them were previously confirmed patients who had been discharged from hospitals. They were unlikely to be contagious, officials said. The other two were a 63-year-old man who lived in Kwai Tsing and had been to several markets in West Kowloon, as well as a 22-year-old woman living in Tuen Mun.
