HK infection tally at 129, all members of Egypt tour infected

HONG KONG - All the members of a nine-people tour group from Hong Kong to Egypt have been infected with the coronavirus, local heatlh authorities said on Wednesday, as the number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong rose to 129.

Five members of the tour group and its tour guide were confirmed postive on Wednesday. Three other members of the group were confirmed on Tuesday. 

One of the latest confirmed cases involves a 22-year-old flight attendant who worked on flight CX320 from Madrid and arrived in Hong Kong on March 8

The group, which consisted of eight tourists and one guide, traveled to Egypt from Feb 27 to March 7.

Johnny So, general manager of Sunflower Travel Service that organized the tour, told local media that the company would suspend all group tours to Egypt until end of this month. 

The group tour took the flight TK695 by Turkish Airlines from Cairo in Egypt to Istanbul in Turkey on March 6 and then departed Istanbul on flight TK70 and arrived in Hong Kong on March 7. Passengers who travelled in the same flight have been urged to call the health authorities.

Another new case involved a 22-year-old flight attendant who worked on flight CX320 from Madrid, Spain and arrived in Hong Kong on March 8. A female passenger of the flight has been tested positive for the virus earlier, and the flight attendant was traced as a contact of her. 

According to Cathay Pacific, other cabin crew on the flight had not worked on other flights since Saturday. They are all under quarantine at home while the airplane on which they flew has been sterilized.

For the remaining two new cases, one involved a 36-year-old woman who is the daughter of a previously confirmed patient while another involved a 31-year-old woman who arrived at Hong Kong from England on Feb 29. 

The Controller of the CHP Wong Ka-hing said at a briefing on Wednesday that the COVID-19 epidemic situation is changing rapidly around the world and Hong Kong has seen multiple imported cases recently. He again urged members of the public to consider delaying all non-essential travel outside Hong Kong.

Lau Ka-hin, chief manager for quality and standards of Hong Kong's Hospital Authority, said at the briefing that two patients was discharged from the hospital after recovery on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cured patients to 66, while 57 patients remain hospitalized.
