WUHAN - Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday said the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) epidemic will not affect the fundamentals of China's steady and long-term sound economic development.

Inspecting the epidemic prevention and control work in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, Xi called for firm and meticulous implementation of the supporting policies issued by the country and adopt targeted measures to assist enterprises, stabilize employment and create more jobs.

The president also vowed to resolutely fight for a victory in the war against the novel coronavirus disease.

Xi said after hard work, the situation in Hubei and Wuhan has shown positive changes with important progress, but the prevention and control task remains arduous

The spread of the novel coronavirus disease has been basically curbed in Hubei province and its capital city Wuhan, Xi said, adding that initial success has been made in stabilizing the situation and turning the tide in Hubei and Wuhan.

Xi said after hard work, the situation in Hubei and Wuhan has shown positive changes with important progress, but the prevention and control task remains arduous.

He lauded medical workers as "the most beautiful angels" and "messengers of light and hope", noting that medical staff, including military medical personnel, had rushed to Hubei and its capital Wuhan without hesitation after the epidemic outbreak, and have made important contributions to curbing the epidemic.

The frontline medical workers have taken on the most arduous missions, Xi said, calling them "the most admirable people in the new era" who deserve the highest commendations. Xi also called on medical staff to strengthen personal protection.

He said the positive trend in preventing and controlling the virus could not have been won without the sacrifice, devotion, perseverance and hard efforts of the people of Wuhan.

Xi expressed condolences to Chinese people who died in the epidemic, and people who sacrificed their lives fighting on the front line

With their concrete actions, Wuhan people have demonstrated the strength and spirit of China, as well as the Chinese people's love for the family and the nation, which enables them to stick together through thick and thin, Xi said.

He expressed condolences to Chinese people who died in the epidemic, and people who sacrificed their lives fighting on the front line.

On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, Xi extended greetings to all Party members, cadres and people in Hubei province and its capital city of Wuhan.

He also said the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus disease is a test for China's system and capacity for governance, which has brought both experience and lessons.

Xi went straight to Huoshenshan Hospital after his arrival in Wuhan.
