Epicenter sees less than 20 new COVID-19 cases for first time

WUHAN/BEIJING - The number of newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 fell below 20 for the first time in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, a health official said Tuesday.

Wuhan, the capital city of central China's Hubei province, reported 17 new infections on Monday, and no new confirmed cases were reported in other cities of the province for five consecutive days, said Mi Feng, an official with the National Health Commission, at a press conference.

The epidemic situation continues developing toward a good prospect, said Mi, noting that the Chinese mainland, excluding Hubei, has not seen any new indigenous COVID-19 cases for three consecutive days.

Precise epidemic prevention and control measures have been implemented across the country to gradually resume work, production and school, as well as people's normal lives.

The National Health Commission said Tuesday it received reports of 19 new confirmed cases and 17 deaths on the Chinese mainland on Monday.

All the newly reported deaths were in Hubei.

Meanwhile, 36 new suspected cases were reported, said the commission.

Also on Monday, 1,297 people were discharged from hospital after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by 317 to 4,794.

The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 80,754 by the end of Monday, including 17,721 patients who were still being treated, 59,897 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 3,136 people who died of the disease.

In Hubei, the total number of confirmed cases had reached 67,760, and 3,024 deaths had been reported. Wuhan has so far registered 49,965 confirmed cases and 2,404 deaths.

The province also saw 1,152 patients discharged from hospital after recovery on Monday, bringing the total number of discharged patients in the province to 47,585.

Among the 14,957 hospitalized patients, 3,855 were still in severe condition and another 846 in critical condition.

Hubei had 246 suspected cases after 44 suspected cases were ruled out, while 13 new suspected cases were reported on Monday.

The commission said that 349 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

The commission added that 16,982 close contacts were still under medical observation. On Monday, 4,148 people were discharged from medical observation.

Also on Monday, two imported cases of novel coronavirus infection were reported on the mainland, one of which was in Beijing and the other one was in Guangdong province. By the end of Monday, 69 imported cases had been reported, said the commission.

By the end of Monday, 115 confirmed cases including three deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 10 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 45 in Taiwan including one death.

A total of 60 patients in Hong Kong, 10 in Macao and 15 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospital after recovery.
