Hong Kong govt officials donate HK$10.8m to fight epidemic

Major government officials in Hong Kong have each donated one month’s remuneration amounting to more than HK$10.8 million to the Community Chest of Hong Kong. 

The donation came from Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and 44 political appointees, including secretaries of departments, directors of bureaus, the director of the Chief Executive's Office, under secretaries and political assistants of the special administrative region government.

The move demonstrated dedication of top administrators in fighting the disease and riding out the difficult times with the public, the government said in a press release on Friday. 

The government said it believes that the Community Chest will effectively distribute donations from across the society to institutions that serve the community and ensure that help will be delivered to those in need.

The Community Chest of Hong Kong is a leading non-governmental and non-profit charity organization established in 1968. In light of the epidemic, it established in February The Community Chest Anti-NCP Rainbow Fund to support individuals and families hit hardest by the coronavirus outbreak.
