With its “natural advantages”, Hong Kong’s business sector is well placed to play a pioneering role in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development, the central government’s top liaison official in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region said.

Wang Zhimin — director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR — made the comments on Tuesday when meeting representatives from the business community. They included legislators and heads of the city’s major business chambers and associations.

The Bay Area blueprint has offered “historic” opportunities for Hong Kong to integrate into the national development and achieve greater success, Wang said.

With a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s “protagonist role” in the Bay Area development, the city could turn these opportunities into a successful outcome, he added.

Hong Kong’s business sector has “natural advantages” as they have well-established connections with the Chinese mainland — especially cities in the Pearl River Delta region. By utilizing the strengths, the sector can shoulder a pioneering role in and contribute to Bay Area development.

Moreover, the business sector should maximize the city’s advantages in key area — including finance, business management, free flow of information and business connections — expand market size and boost economic growth, Wang said.

The business sector could also seize opportunities offered by other national strategies, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, to assist Hong Kong’s integration into national development, he added.

The liaison chief encouraged business leaders to have faith in the city and the country, while continuing to support the SAR’s law-based governance.

Leaders of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, the Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Chinese Importers’ and Exporters’ Association attended the meeting.

Wang also shared his views on the two sessions — the annual sessions of the National People’s Congress, the country’s top legislature, and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference — the nation’s top political advisory body. In the past two weeks, Wang had on various occasions spoken of the highlights of the two sessions, including a seminar attended by about 300 government officials.
