President Xi pays tribute to victims of bus accident

President Xi Jinping on Monday expressed his condolences and sympathy to families of victims of the fatal bus crash in Hong Kong last Saturday.

The president instructed the SAR government to work hard to deal with the aftermath of the accident - including helping the injured and consoling families of the victims

The president’s message of condolences was relayed to Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor by Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong immediately after the accident - which killed 19 passengers and injured 66.

The president instructed the SAR government to work hard to deal with the aftermath of the accident - including helping the injured and consoling families of the victims. He also commended the SAR government for its emergency management work.

The Liaison Office said on Monday that its staff and those of the Commissioner’s Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison will observe a one-minute silence at 10 am on Tuesday.Premier Li Keqiang and National People’s Congress Standing Committee Chairman Zhang Dejiang also expressed condolences and sympathy.

Joining the mourning was Xie Feng, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR. He sent a letter of condolence to Lam.

Xie, representing all his colleagues in Hong Kong, paid tribute to the victims and expressed his respects to affected families.

In Hong Kong’s second deadliest ever road accident on Saturday, a double-decker bus on its way to Tai Po from Sha Tin Racecourse in the New Territories toppled over as it rode a special horseracing day route.

Eighteen people were pronounced dead at the scene and one died in hospital. Of the 66 injured passengers, six were still in critical condition as of Monday night.
