HONG KONG - The central government’s top liaison official on Tuesday called for joint efforts involving all legislators to promote Hong Kong’s development and maintain its long-term prosperity.

Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, made the remarks during a spring luncheon with the SAR’s lawmakers.
It was the first time the office invited all legislators to join the spring reception at the office’s headquarters in Sai Wan.
He said lawmakers should join with the Liaison Office to support the SAR government in its law-based governance; together they can proactively improve people’s livelihoods.
Quoting President Xi Jinping, Wang said the executive, legislative and judicial authorities in Hong Kong should each perform their duties and collectively contribute to the city’s future.
“We are delighted to see that the Legislative Council, as an important part of the SAR’s political institutions, has provided sound support to the city’s governance,” Wang said.
In the 2017-18 legislative year, LegCo passed 27 bills - double that of the previous legislative year, Wang noted. These covered various areas and boosted the SAR’s economic development, he said.
He also hopes LegCo can cooperate with the Liaison Office to promote the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development and work for Hong Kong’s integration into the country’s overall development.

Participation and suggestions from all sectors in Hong Kong, including from lawmakers, are very much needed for the city to seize opportunities in Bay Area development, Wang said.
He believes lawmakers can make pragmatic suggestions and help break down institutional barriers.
This will help create more favorable conditions for the Bay Area development and make full use of the “one country, two systems” principle in the country’s reform and opening-up, Wang said.
He said he hoped all LegCo members could work to consolidate the rule of law and safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, security and development interests.

Wang also called on the lawmakers to continue to play a positive role in improving the SAR’s constitutional arrangements relating to the national Constitution and the Basic Law, including local legislation regarding the National Anthem Law.
