HONG KONG – The central government’s liaison chief in Hong Kong on Wednesday urged the special administrative region’s district councils to serve as a bridge between the SAR government and its residents in promoting policies to boost people’s livelihoods.
Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR, suggested when meeting chairmen of the 18 district councils that the bodies take a leading role in promoting a sense of national identity and patriotism in the city.
The district councils – nine in urban areas and nine in the New Territories – advise the government and undertake local administration in Hong Kong.
Wang praised the councils’ contribution to district affairs and the city’s prosperity and stability.
He advised district councils to continue adhering to the “one country” principle, while maximizing the benefits of “two systems”.
Wang said they should maintain Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability while helping the SAR integrate into the nation’s development.
Wang said district councils should attach great importance to youth development. They could help young people tackle difficulties they face in education, employment and starting businesses, he added.
This year marks the 21st anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to the motherland. Wang urged society to cherish and safeguard the city’s achievements, advance its development and ensure successful and stable implementation of “one country, two systems”.
Tai Po District Council Chairman Cheung Hok-ming and Sai Kung District Council Chairman George Ng Sze-fuk also stressed the importance of maintaining Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability while supporting its integration into the country’s overall development.
They said district councils should work hard to serve citizens while supporting the rule of law.
