BEIJING – Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the 14th Group of 20 (G20) summit in Osaka, Japan from June 27 to 29, China’s foreign ministry confirmed Sunday.
Xi will visit Japan at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, according to Lu Kang, spokesperson for the ministry.

The announcement came in the first official confirmation of the Chinese leader’s attendance at a gathering where he is expected to meet US President Donald Trump.

Analysts said President Xi's meeting with Trump could be pivotal to getting negotiations back on track to de-escalate trade tensions between the United States and China.
