HONG KONG - A new study shows that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area recorded more than 176,000 patent applications last year - outnumbering the total of the other three world-known bay areas.

In terms of the classification of patents, the strengths of the Bay Area mainly centered on consumer electronics manufacturing and advanced manufacturing, the study showed

On Saturday, Guangdong Institute of Scientific and Technical Information - a national-level scientific institution focusing on novelty searches - released the study. It found that patent applications in New York, San Francisco and Tokyo bay areas are 22,000, 12,000 and 35,000, respectively.

In terms of the classification of patents, the strengths of the Bay Area mainly centered on consumer electronics manufacturing and advanced manufacturing, the study showed.

The study also reads that 11 enterprises in the Bay Area were among the top 20 organizations skilled in patent application. They included Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, internet giant Tencent, and ZTE Corporation, a powerhouse in telecommunications and information technology.

With the Bay Area’s applications via the Patent Cooperation Treaty accounting for 5.79 percent of the total number, the study also showed international patent applications in the region are undergoing rapid growth.

The PCT assists applicants in seeking patent protection internationally for their inventions. By filing one international patent application under the PCT, applicants can simultaneously seek protection for an invention in a large number of countries.

Last year, China’s applications via the PCT reached 48,882, leaping to second in the world, occupying about 3.4 percent of total patent applications, statistics from the National Intellectual Property Administration showed.

Amid calls to build the Bay Area into an international innovative and scientific hub, the study also suggested local governments invest more in basic research to achieve high-quality developments.
