HONG KONG - Young people in Hong Kong should jump at the chance to join the city’s high-tech adventure, a senior liaison official of the central government said on Friday.

Policy support from the central government and the Hong Kong administration’s determination to drive innovation and technology development forward created the perfect opportunity, Tan Tieniu, deputy director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said.

Tan told about 500 students at the launch ceremony of the Mainland Internship Program for Hong Kong Students that the city had the solid foundation for technology development and collective recognition in society needed to push the industry forward.

Should Hong Kong achieve advances in financial technology, this will consolidate the city’s status as an international financial center, for example, Tan said.

Hong Kong has advantages in basic science research while Shenzhen has great applied technology development potential, Tan said. He noted that cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area were strong in mass production; the massive market on the mainland generates a great consumer market. Complementary development can be achieved, Tan said.

This complementary backing by Bay Area cities meant Hong Kong was well-placed globally in inno-tech development terms, Tan said. It is a good time for Hong Kong to foster technology industry development, he added.

The Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park will be an important platform for technology talents and research centers in the Bay Area, Tan predicts. He encouraged youngsters and the city to seize the “golden opportunity” for development.

The six-week internship program will take 1,000 university students in Hong Kong to the mainland this summer.

Joseph Chan Hoi-wing, a student from the University of Hong Kong majoring in economics and finance, worked as an intern at China Merchants Securities last summer through the program. Chan said the experience gave him a better understanding of the country; he traveled around Shenzhen during the trip.

Chan suggested students embarking on internships have good interactions with mainland colleagues and let their colleagues know they have a keen interest in the post.

City University of Hong Kong student Adrian Ho Tsun-hei interned at China Telecom in Guangzhou last summer. He said he was pleased to develop a good relationship with mainland colleagues.

With the program in its eighth year, nearly 200 companies in the accounting, bank, internet, property and inno-tech industries will offer posts for students in eight cities. These include Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

The internship program is jointly organized by Hong Kong Arts and Culture Development Center, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Society of Hong Kong and Student Aid Association.
