Hong Kong police confirmed that no tear gas was fired at or inside a car park building in Tseung Kwan O – where a student fell and was critically injured – in the early hours of  Monday.

Police made the comments to refute criticism of their actions in Tseung Kwan O at the time the young student protester fell from a car park building amid claims he had been dodging tear gas.

Foo Yat-ting, senior superintendent of Hong Kong Police Force’s Kowloon East Region, said according to police operational records, the tear gas rounds were fired at least 120 meters away during a dispersal action.

Foo also on Tuesday refuted allegations that police officers held up on-site medical services to the injured student provided by the fire services.

The incident was believed to have occurred at 00:45 to 1 am on Monday before any police officers came to the car park, explained Ewing Wu Ka-yan, superintendent of Police (Operations) Crime Kowloon East Regional Police Headquarters.

The injured student, surnamed Chow, suffered a severe brain injury after falling from the third to the second floor of a car park where protesters were hurling hard objects at police officers.

Chow, a student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei. He was still unconscious and in a critical condition as of Tuesday night after two brain surgeries.

On Monday night, hundreds of students besieged the HKUST president Wei Shyy, demanding he make a statement condemning police brutality. Shyy said the university would investigate the incident and ask police for details.

An open dialogue between Shyy and students was later scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
