Hong Kong International Airport bore testimony on Tuesday night to a shocking display of sheer brutality that can only be perpetrated and appreciated by terrorists. People in Hong Kong, on the Chinese mainland and around the world were outraged by video clips on social media and TV broadcasts showing hundreds of rioters committing acts no civilized society on Earth would tolerate under any circumstances.
While staging what was alleged to be a “peaceful sit-in” within the airport complex, radical rioters turned themselves into a bona fide lynch mob by subjecting two travelers from the mainland, including a reporter, to hours of illegal detention, unauthorized body searches, savage torture and wanton disclosure of their identities on the internet, accusing them of being “mainland security agents”. The mobsters surrounded paramedics called to the scene to take their brutalized victims to hospital and refused to let them go for hours. They also insanely attacked police officers dispatched to escort the ambulance at the request of Airport Authority Hong Kong.
It’s quite obvious these modern-day lynch mobs had every intention to prolong the suffering of their victims by any means conceivable. In so doing, these self-appointed executioners of “mainland agents” and “undercover police” have exterminated all the excuses the instigators and supporters of the illegal political campaign have come up with since it turned violent in early June. A foreign journalist at the scene stepped forward and tried to talk some sense into these torturers. We applaud and salute Mr. Richard Scotford and several unidentified Hong Kong residents for saving one of our compatriots from certain death at the hands of the brainwashed rioters.
In a statement issued on Wednesday morning, a spokesperson for the State Council’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office expressed “utmost indignation at and strongest condemnation of” the outburst of hatred and savagery toward innocent people who happened to be mainland compatriots, saying such acts smack of terrorism. A spokesperson for the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR also strongly denounced the rioters’ abhorrent behavior, as did the HKSAR government and law-abiding citizens across a wide spectrum of Hong Kong society.
We share the feelings of many people in Hong Kong and on the mainland, as well as their compassion for the victims who were brutally attacked at HKIA on Tuesday night. We’re on the same page with all those who have expressed outrage, revulsion and a strong desire for the perpetrators of such a heinous crime against humanity to be brought to justice as soon as possible. There’s absolutely no justification for such hate-driven madness to continue at the expense of everything that generations of Hong Kong residents are proud of, especially the city’s rule of law and moral fortitude.
