The commissioner demanded foreign forces stop applying double standards and interfering in China’s domestic affairs, after the United States and a number of Western countries voiced their support for the violent protests in Hong Kong
Xie Feng, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, made the comment on Friday in a keynote speech at the 2019 Qianhai Cooperation Forum in Shenzhen.
The forum, “Grasp the Great Opportunity to Jointly Build the GBA”, was attended by senior officials, business leaders and academics in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to deepen crossboundary cooperation. Foreign forces should “withdraw their black hands” and “stop playing with fire”, Xie said.
The commissioner demanded foreign forces stop applying double standards and interfering in China’s domestic affairs, after the United States and a number of Western countries voiced their support for the violent protests in Hong Kong.
Xie reiterated that Hong Kong’s development after its return to the motherland in 1997 has proved “one country, two systems” to be a success. He affirmed the central government’s unwavering support for the SAR government in safeguarding the city’s rule of law and bringing lawbreakers to justice.
He condemned the city’s radical protesters for their violent acts, including the storming of the Legislative Council Complex and besieging of police headquarters and the liaison office building. “Such acts are a challenge to the bottom line of ‘one country, two systems’.”
Echoing Xie, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying restressed the central government’s stance on Friday. “China will not tolerate any foreign forces intervening in Hong Kong affairs, nor will it allow any foreign forces to destabilize Hong Kong,” she said at a daily media briefing.

Hua urged the US and some other countries to abide by international law and basic norms governing global relations, sincerely honor their nonintervention promises on Hong Kong affairs, and immediately stop interfering with Hong Kong’s affairs — which are purely China’s domestic affairs.
These remarks followed a spate of condemnations by different central government authorities. Yang Jiechi, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, on Thursday criticized the US for backing the illegal activities of violent protesters with the aim of undermining the city’s prosperity and security.
