TOKYO — Tokyo's Paralympics could be the big winner with Olympic tickets hard to find and costly.
The lottery for Paralympics tickets for Japan residents opened on Thursday with 2.3 million available. The lottery closes on Sept 9. A second lottery will be held early next year. After that, tickets will be sold at stands.
Some event tickets sell for as low as 900 yen, or about US$8
Applicants must first register to get a "Tokyo 2020 ID", which is also needed to buy tickets for Olympic events. According to the organizers, about 7.6 million people had registered as of August 1.
Each applicant can apply up to 30 tickets as their first choice and an additional 30 as their second choice. The maximum number of tickets each applicant will be able to purchase is 30.
The Games' organizing committee is calling on applicants to note that the official ticket website for the Paralympics is different than that for the Olympics. It also said that the timing of applications would not affect the results of the lottery.
Applications will be accepted through 11:59 am on Sept 9. Lottery results will be announced on Oct 2.
Olympic tickets are experiencing unprecedented demand in Japan and elsewhere. Demand is at least 10 times over supply for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and probably much more than that.
Paralympic tickets should be more available, and less expensive. Tickets for the opening and closing ceremony are about half the price of Olympic tickets. Some event tickets sell for as low as 900 yen, or about US$8.
The Paralympics open on Aug 25, 2020 — one year from Sunday.
