HONG KONG - A high-level body dedicated to activities marking the 40th anniversary of the country’s reform and opening-up will offer Hong Kong people a better understanding of the past and future of the massive development drive, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said on Friday.

She made the remarks while officiating at a themed photo exhibition at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The new steering committee, chaired by Chief Secretary for Administration Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, will lead a series of events including themed seminars and exhibitions. The committee will also encourage people from various sectors to organize citywide and district-level events. Lam said.

This aims to help Hong Kong people learn more about the history and influence of the reform and opening-up policy in regard to both the nation and Hong Kong. This would help them develop a better understanding of the opportunities which lie ahead, Lam said.

This series of events will be carried out under the theme “Joint Development: Shared Prosperity”, according to the special administrative region government.

Hong Kong was not only a contributor but a beneficiary during the 40 years, Lam noted. In the early years, Hong Kong’s investments, talents and mature systems aided the mainland’s development, she said. A more prosperous mainland in return boosted the city’s industrial transformation, the CE added.

With its connector role, Hong Kong has strengthened its international commercial, logistics, shipping, financial and professional services in the process, Lam stressed.

The 40-year journey demonstrated Hong Kong’s continuous efforts in leveraging its advantages to meet the country's needs, Lam said.

The government will continue to increase cooperation with the mainland in the spirit of the nation’s reform and opening-up, she added.

The government has already rolled out an official logo and other themed designs for these events. It said a dedicated website for sharing information with the public will soon be launched.
