HONG KONG - Hong Kong society has seen encouraging, positive changes since the city’s fourth chief executive took office in July last year, the central government’s liaison chief said on Wednesday.
Lam said she was upbeat about Hong Kong’s future development. “My confidence is even higher than in past years”
Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, told a reception celebrating the 21st anniversary of the SAR and 29th anniversary of the Friends of Hong Kong Association that, under Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor’s administration, the city enjoyed a more “refreshing, healthy and united” atmosphere.
Wang noted when addressing the association, which unites patriotic cross-sector leaders, that it was almost a year since Lam had assumed office.
The achievements did not come easily, explained Wang. He urged sectors in Hong Kong to cherish, consolidate and further develop such favorable prospects.
Echoing Wang’s sentiments on the same occasion, Lam said she was upbeat about Hong Kong’s future development. “My confidence is even higher than in past years.”
Lam said the people of Hong Kong felt more at ease as economic growth last year had reached 3.8 percent – 1.1 percentage points higher than the average growth rate of the past 11 years.
Pledging to spare no efforts to tackle the city’s land and housing issues, Lam said the SAR had a bright future. It would benefit from opportunities brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development.

Lam left on a visit to Europe the same day. The CE said that as an international city, Hong Kong must attach great importance to its image abroad. It had to present itself to the world as a promising city which was well-governed under the “one country, two systems” principle, she added.
