HONG KONG-Thirteen Hong Kong-based academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the China Engineering Academy on Wednesday condemned the illegal and violent acts by radical protesters in recent demonstrations.
They issued a statement in response to the escalating violence, including the assault on two mainland residents by mobsters at Hong Kong International Airport on Tuesday.
The scholars warned that unless violence is effectively curbed, the Hong Kong community will have to pay a heavy price, adding that a small number of radical protesters are attempting to jeopardize the rule of law – one of the city’s core values -- and push Hong Kong to the verge of anarchy.
Noting that Hong Kong’s continued development is based on the rule of law and stability, the academicians said extremely violent acts will destroy its future.
“By then, Hong Kong will not only lose its advantages in the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, but also miss the opportunities to turn itself into a global innovation and technology hub,” the statement said.
The scholars urged Hong Kong residents to support Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor and her administration in exercising law-based governance, and back the police in rigorously enforcing the law.
