BEIJING/HONG KONG - The government and people of China firmly oppose the signing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act by the United States, the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, calling the move bullying.

Signing the bill into law severely meddles in Hong Kong affairs, severely interferes in China's internal matters and seriously violates international laws and basic norms governing international relations, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement

The intention of the US side is very vicious by bolstering violent criminals who smashed facilities, attacked innocent residents, trampled on the rule of law and social order, the ministry said.

The ministry said that the fundamental purpose of the US side is to destroy Hong Kong's prosperity and stability, undermine the great practice of "one country, two systems" and barricade the historical process of realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

'United States is the biggest culprit'

The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of China's State Council followed with a swift condemnation of signing into law of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019.

The US side signed it into law regardless of strong opposition from the Chinese side, which is a blatant interference in China's internal affairs and severe violation of international laws and the basic norms governing international relations, the office said in a statement.

The so-called act, denounced by all Chinese, including Hong Kong people, is imbued with prejudice and arrogance, and treats Hong Kong with intimidation and threats, according to the statement which stressed that the act openly backed those attempting to disrupt Hong Kong and antagonize China.

"Facts have proved that the United States is the biggest culprit in disrupting Hong Kong," the statement reads.

"The future of Hong Kong has always been in the hands of the Chinese people with Hong Kong compatriots included, and no force can stop the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," the statement reads.

Commissioner's Office says 'grave interference'

In Hong Kong, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China issued a statement Thursday, saying the US administration's move to sign into law bills, including the so-called "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act" constituted "a grave interference with Hong Kong affairs, which are China's internal affairs, and in violation of international law and basic norms governing international relations."

The Commissioner's Office said in the statement that the so-called act confounded right with wrong and was an epitome of gangster logic. "Its aim is to condone violent crime, destruct Hong Kong and 'One Country, Two Systems', and prevent Chinese people from realizing the great rejuvenation of the nation," reads the statement.

In the statement, the Commissioner's Office iterated that the Chinese government was rock-firm in safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests, in implementing the "One Country, Two Systems" policy, and in opposing any external interference in Hong Kong affairs. "The Chinese people, including our Hong Kong compatriots, will counter the unscrupulous actions of the US side head-on," reads the statement.
