VIENNA - Cooperation between China and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is going from strength to strength, the organization's director Simonetta Di Pippo said on Tuesday.

Shi Zhongjun, China's envoy to UN in Vienna, said China is committed to cooperation for better space governance

Di Pippo said China has made great achievements in outer space exploration and its related activities, and it has demonstrated its commitment to international ties in using outer space.

In a Tuesday speech to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first UN Outer Space Conference, Shi Zhongjun, China's envoy to UN in Vienna, said China is committed to cooperation for better space governance. He also noted China is dedicated to cooperate with nations in promoting outer space development.

After more than 60 years of hard work, China has established a comprehensive, systematic, and advanced aerospace scientific, technological and industrial system, and has become an important emerging force in the exploration and use of outer space, the Chinese envoy said.

"We shall work together to promote sustainable development in outer space and make the 'cake' bigger," Shi said.

The "cake", Shi said, should be shared fairly to benefit countries especially developing nations by narrowing the "space divide" through cooperation.

With China's plans to open the China Space Station (CSS) to all the Member States of the United Nations, offering opportunities for flying their space experiments on board the Station, Di Pippo said this groundbreaking project will bring benefits to countries for advancing their space science and technology development.

With an agreement between UNOOSA and the China National Space Administration (CNSA), China provides satellite imagery to countries in need of support in their preparedness, mitigation and early warning actions where applied methods and techniques can benefit from Earth observation data.

Di Pippa added the Declaration of Intent to cooperate on the Belt and Road Space Information Corridor, signed on Tuesday between China and the UNOOSA, would bring the partnership to a whole new level while applying space technology and its applications to countries along the Belt and Road.
