China has for a second consecutive year topped the trust index survey among 27 markets, with people's trust in institutions rising by five points to 79, said a recent report.

The report, jointly issued by Edelman China and the National Image Research Center under Tsinghua University, showed that China's trust scores were the best among all the four key different types of public institutions surveyedgovernment, media, non-governmental organizations and businesses.

The report also showed that trust changed profoundly in the past year with "my employer" becoming the most trusted institution globally. In China, "my employer" has gained the same level of trust as the government, which is higher than the global average and ranks second among all the markets surveyed.

"The last decade has seen a loss of faith in traditional authority figures and institutions. More recently, people have lost confidence in the social platforms that fostered peer-to-peer trust. These forces have led people to shift their trust to the relationships within their control, most notably their employers," said Richard Edelman, president and CEO of Edelman.

Employment was an important topic in the recently concluded two sessions, and Premier Li Keqiang stated in the Government Work Report that employment will be one of the top priorities for China this year.

They should not only tell a good corporate story on the global stage, but also engage directly and cultivate a trusted employer-employee relationship

The research on the relationship between employer and employee in the report sheds new light on the resilience required to deal with external challenges. Chinese employees' expectations now go beyond the fundamental conditions to include societal change. In addition to providing them with salary increases, training and career development opportunities are also fast becoming concerns for employers.

Chinese employees now expect their employers to actively join them in advocating for and creating a meaningful societal impact and expect to have a voice in key corporate decisions.

In addition, CEOs are expected to lead the fight for change. More than four fifths surveyed in China say they want CEOs to take the lead on change. The number is much higher than the global number, reflecting the Chinese public's strong desire and high expectations on businesses. And 80 percent believe a company can take actions that increase profits and improve economic and social conditions within the community it operates.

"Chinese companies should equip their CEOs' with the capability to be visible and be aspirational. They should not only tell a good corporate story on the global stage, but also engage directly and cultivate a trusted employer-employee relationship and such a relationship may in turn, become a part of their big story," said Fan Hong, director of the National Image Research Center of Tsinghua University.
