TEGUCIGALPA - Uruguayan Fabian Coito has insisted that his main objective as Honduras coach is to help the Central American team qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 51-year-old faced the media for the first time as boss of Los Catrachos on Thursday, having officially replaced interim manager Jorge Jimenez last week.

"The main objective is to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar," Coito said. "I'm confident that together we can achieve this dream. I'm grateful for the trust the (Honduras Football Federation) has placed in me. It's a beautiful challenge."

Coito is no stranger to Honduran football, having played with local first division club Olimpia Honduras as a defender in the mid-1990s.

His 15-year professional coaching career has included spells in charge of Uruguay's U-15, U-17 and U-20 national teams. He was also briefly the interim manager of Uruguay's senior men's team last year as Oscar Tabarez temporarily stepped aside while negotiating a new contract.

"Being a national coach carries a big responsibility," Coito said. "For me, to return to this country after 25 years, is exciting and something I'm looking forward to."

Honduras has qualified for the World Cup three times: in 1982, 2010 and 2014.
