The central government’s top liaison officer in Hong Kong pledged that his office would extend full support to the city, assisting the special administrative region to act more proactively in the country’s comprehensive reform and opening-up.

Wang Zhimin, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR, made the pledge when presiding over a meeting on Wednesday attended by senior liaison officers in Hong Kong.

The meeting centered on reviewing and discussing President Xi Jinping’s speech made when meeting with Hong Kong and Macao delegations in Beijing on Monday.

Wang described Xi’s speech as an “assembly horn” and “mobilization order” for Hong Kong and Macao people, urging them actively engage in future reform and opening-up while safeguarding “one country, two systems”.

The Liaison Office will support Hong Kong, helping the city to play a more proactive role in contributing to the country’s further reforms, as well as integrating into the nation’s overall development, Wang said.

In addition, support from the office would also be given to helping Hong Kong participate in national governance, promoting more international exchanges and creating more opportunities for young people.

Xie Feng, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the HKSAR, and General Tan Benhong, commander of the People Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, also present at the meeting together with the heads of major State-owned companies in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong and Macao SARs respectively led a delegation to Beijing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the reform and opening-up. The delegations comprised representatives of various sectors who have made significant contributions to the country’s opening-up.

During the meeting, Xi told delegation members that both Hong Kong and Macao will play an irreplaceable role in reform and opening-up in the new era. The president urged them to embrace this by actively integrating into the country’s development, engaging in national governance, international exchanges and encouraging young people.

Zhang Xiaoming, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, said Xi’s speech had on one hand ensured Hong Kong and Macao people are aware of the country’s commitment to become more open and bolder in regard to reforms.

On the other, it showed the central government’s sincere wish for both SARs to play a positive role in national governance, and in helping with the country’s participation in global governance.

By seizing timely opportunities offered by the reform and opening-up, and actively promoting cross-boundary cooperation, Hong Kong and Macao can achieve a more prosperous future, he added.

Zhang made the remarks in an interview published by Xinhua News Agency on Thursday.
