HONG KONG-Kids living in Hong Kong will soon be able to be fully immersed in the Italian language, as the first Italian-speaking kindergarten plans to open its door in September.

The Italian International Kindergarten will give children of those who have an interest in the Italian language with the best of the country’s educational system, and the rich culture of art and fashion that goes along with it, said Clemente Contestabile, Italy’s consul-general in Hong Kong, during an Italian education event at the school on Wednesday.

Hong Kong is currently home to about 5,000 Italians, and there has been an increasing demand from both the local and Italian community in the city for Italian-language courses or education, according to the consulate, which helps promote the school in Hong Kong.

The kindergarten, which will be on the island of Ap Lei Chau south of Hong Kong Island, will have both whole-day and half-day care for kids aged 2 to 6, regardless of nationality, with courses in Italian/English or English/Mandarin taught by native-speaking teachers.

Among other Italian education centers in the city, such as Scuola Italiana Manzoni and Dante Alighieri Society, the kindergarten will work to preserve the Italian culture overseas, and enhance the school’s engagement and exchange with the local community, said Franco Cutrupia, the kindergarten’s founder and manager.
