BEIJING/URUMQI - China expressed on Wednesday strong indignation at and firm opposition to the passage of a Xinjiang-related bill by the United States House of Representatives, urging Washington to stop pushing the bill to become law.

China will respond further if necessary, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in an online statement.

The Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019 smears the human rights situation in Xinjiang as well as China's efforts to crack down on extremism and terrorism, Hua said.

China urged the US to stop using Xinjiang-related issues to interfere in China's internal affairs, she said. She added that what Xinjiang faces is not about ethnicity, religion or human rights. Rather, it is about fighting violence, terrorism and separatism.

Swift condemnation followed from the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, China's top political advisory body, and China's National Ethnic Affairs Commission.

Both the foreign affairs committee and ethnic affairs commission said in separate statements that the bill passage has grossly interfered with China's internal affairs.

The ethnic affairs commission also said the bill passage has blatantly trampled on international norms.

It added in its statement that the bill is filled with bias against the Chinese government's Xinjiang policies, and has discredited Xinjiang's development achievements and ignored the true feelings of people in Xinjiang.

In Xinjiang, the regional government also expressed strong condemnation of and firm opposition to the passage of the bill.

The approval of the "Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act of 2019" was a wanton smear on the human rights situation in Xinjiang and a flagrant interference in China's internal affairs, the regional government said in a statement.
