HONG KONG - Hong Kong must strengthen its understanding of the relationship between “one country, two systems” and upholding the country's sovereignty, security and development interests, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said on Monday.

Carrie Lam was addressing around 4,000 guests at the National Day reception to mark the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China

Addressing around 4,000 guests from all cross sections of society at the National Day reception held to celebrate the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Lam said the HKSAR government’s work in all areas promoting Hong Kong’s development was strongly supported by the central government.

Lam said the central government particularly supported the city's aspiration to evolve as an international innovation and technology center, to participate in the Belt and Road Initiative and to pave ways for all-rounded development of Hong Kong’s youth.

Such targeted focus had created new areas of growth for Hong Kong's economy, opened up a larger market for Hong Kong's professional services, and provided more opportunities for Hong Kong's young people to pursue their careers, Lam said while pointing out Hong Kong's unique advantages under “one country, two systems". Thus it requires a correct understanding of the principle, the CE said.

“For those work to flourish and bear fruit, as for a tree to grow tall and luxuriant, its roots must run deep and strong," the CE said at the reception.

In her speech, Lam recalled how President Xi Jinping, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the fifth-term HKSAR government on July 1, 2017, had reminded Hong Kong people that it was imperative to strengthen the understanding of the relationship between “one country” and “two systems"

With reference to President Xi's speech, Lam said it was necessary to establish a strong sense of "one country", firmly observe the principle of "one country" and correctly interpret the relationship between the HKSAR and the central government.

“Let us not forget the original spirit of ‘one country, two systems’ but bear in mind the mission of upholding our country's sovereignty, security and development interests,” Lam said.
