Usha Goswami, Sir Fazle Hasan win 2019 Yidan Prize

HONG KONG -  Professor Usha Goswami and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed KCMG were named Wednesday 2019 laureates for Yidan Prize that carries the world's largest purse in the field of education.

While Goswami, a professor of cognitive developmental neuroscience at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom has been awarded the Yidan Prize for Education Research, Sir Fazle Hasan, founder and chair emeritus of Bangladesh’s BRAC, will receive the Yidan Prize for Education Development.

Goswami and Sir Fazle Hasan will receive the honors during the third edition of the awards ceremony in December. The ceremony will be followed by the Yidan Prize Summit and the Yidan Prize Conference Series: Asia-Pacific.

According to a press release issued by the administrators of the prize, this year’s laureates were chosen by a judging committee over a six-month process from an overwhelming number of strong candidates. 

Dr Charles Chen Yidan, Founder of the Yidan Prize, thanked the Yidan Prize Judging Committee for completing the judging process in Hong Kong. He said: “I congratulate Professor Usha Goswami and Sir Fazle Hasan Abed KCMG on their outstanding achievements and commitment to improving education."

The Yidan Prize Judging Committee is led by Dr Koichiro Matsuura, former director-general of UNESCO. Andreas Schleicher, director for the OECD’s Directorate of Education and Skills, heads the panel judging the Yidan Prize for Education Research while Dorothy K Gordon, Chair of UNESCO IFAP, leads the panel judging the Yidan Prize for Education Development.

Each Yidan Prize laureate will receive a gold medal and a sum of HK$30 million (around US$3.9 million), half of which is a cash prize with the remaining going towards a project fund. 

To ensure transparency, the prize is managed by Yidan Prize Foundation and governed by an independent trust with an endowment of HK$2.5 billion (around US$323 million).
