​ASEAN foreign ministers call for solution to Myanmar's Rakhine issue

BANGKOK - ASEAN foreign ministers stressed the need to find a comprehensive and durable solution to address the root causes of conflict in Myanmar's western Rakhine state, Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said on Friday.

At a two-day ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting held in Chiang Mai, Don said ASEAN foreign ministers were briefed by Myanmar on the humanitarian situation in Rakhine and had a fruitful discussion on the issue where they agreed on the importance of ASEAN's role.

ASEAN foreign ministers had pledged support the Myanmar government in its repatriation process and hoped that it would take place as soon as possible

The ministers also agreed to compile information regarding the cooperation and assistance voluntarily extended by ASEAN members to Myanmar to address the humanitarian situation and promote sustainable development. 

The Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army extremists launched attacks on police outposts in Myanmar's Rakhine state on Aug 25 last year, displacing a vast number of residents to border areas with Bangladesh.

"We looked forward to the full implementation of the MOU between Myanmar government, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to facilitate the repatriation process of displaced persons from Rakhine State," the ministers said in a statement.

They also reaffirmed ASEAN's support for Myanmar's efforts to bring peace, stability and the rule of law, to promote harmony and reconciliation among the various communities as well as to ensure sustainable and equitable development in Rakhine state.
