HONG KONG - To help local companies tap the green transportation market and reduce roadside air emissions in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) has recently developed Hong Kong's first plug-in hybrid electric coach and 16-ton pure electric truck.

The center (HKPC) has engaged in the development of the core technologies and charging facilities of electric vehicles, and built a solid foundation on commercialization.

Willy Lin,

Chairman of HKPC

The projects were done by the Automotive Parts and Accessory Systems Research and Development (R&D) Center of HKPC and funded by the Innovation and Technology Fund of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government and industry partners, according to a press release of HKPC on Friday.

The prototype vehicles are now on display at the ongoing Eco Expo Asia International Trade Fair on Environmental Protection in Hong Kong, which will be followed by a series of road tests.

The 12-meter plug-in hybrid electric coach, the-first-of-its-kind to be designed, developed and assembled in Hong Kong, can recharge its Lithium Titanate batteries on the fly. As compared to traditional diesel coaches, it can achieve at least 40 percent fuel saving and 70 percent reduction in emission.

The 16-ton pure electric truck provides a zero-emission solution, for instance, for the transport of construction and building material waste. Specifically designed for heavy-duty commercial vehicles, the truck features a universal chassis design that can also be used in garbage trucks, box type and other heavy-duty vehicles. It also features a hill-hold-and-start function.

Willy Lin, Chairman of HKPC, said that to support Hong Kong companies to seize on opportunities in the green transportation market, the center has engaged in the development of the core technologies and charging facilities of electric vehicles, and built a solid foundation on commercialization.

"Riding on the HKSAR government's policy to promote smart city and green transportation, the center will continue to serve as the R&D partner of local industries, in their pursuit of new business opportunities," Lin added.
