Beginning on May 2, eligible Hong Kong residents will be able to buy social insurance of mainland cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area without leaving Hong Kong through a service offered by the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions.

The service will be available in seven of the federation’s district offices — on Hong Kong Island, and in Kowloon, Kwun Tong, Yau Ma Tei, Sha Tin, Yuen Long and Tsuen Wan, the federation announced on Thursday. Currently, many of those who need the insurance are required to visit the mainland cities’ respective social security departments to finish the procedure.

Federation President Stanley Ng Chau-pei said employees of FTU will also offer guidance in the seven offices to help residents use online social security service of Guangdong

The federation launched the service to better facilitate Hong Kong residents’ lives in the Greater Bay Area. The service will be in collaboration with social security authorities of mainland cities of the Bay Area, and it was entrusted by the Human Resource and Social Security Department of Guangdong Province.

Since Jan 1, 2020, the central government has allowed Hong Kong residents to buy social insurance of mainland cities, allowing them equal treatment with their mainland counterparts. For those working on the mainland, their mainland employers will purchase the insurance for them. Hong Kong people who are self-employed on the mainland or don’t have jobs there can register in related departments with the necessary documentation.

Federation President Stanley Ng Chau-pei said employees of FTU will also offer guidance in the seven offices to help residents use online social security service of Guangdong.
