Chinese shares close higher Tuesday

BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 2.31 percent to 3,149.75 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.4 percent higher at 11,089.01 points.

The turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at about 968.1 billion yuan (about $134.48 billion), up from 758.4 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to hotel, tourism, and real estate sectors led the gains, while some stocks in the electricity sector saw declines.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.78 percent to close at 2,339.79 points.
