COVID-19 cases drop for third consecutive day in HK to 5,210

HONG KONG – Hong Kong’s daily COVID cases dropped for the third straight day to 5,210 on Sunday while 12 more patients in public hospitals passed away.

The Centre for Health Protection said in a statement that the new cases included 4,732 local infections and 478 imported cases. Hong Kong recorded 6,062 cases on Thursday; 5,656 on Friday, and 5,427 yesterday.

As of Sunday, the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch has identified a total of 202 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, six of BA.4.6, 11 of BF.7 and 22 of BQ.1.1 among imported cases, the CHP said.

There were also a total of six cases of sub-lineage XBD, one of BA.2.75.2 and seven of BQ.1.1 among local infections, it added.

The CHP also said that the 12 new deaths brought the city’s toll during the fifth wave of infections to 10,172.

In a separate statement, the Hospital Authority said a total of 1,955 COVID-19 patients were being treated in public hospitals, including 197 new patients.  

Twenty-nine were in critical condition, including nine receiving intensive care, while 41 were in serious condition, the HA added.

Also on Sunday, Secretary for the Civil Service Ingrid Yeung Ho Poi-yan attended a COVID-19 vaccination event in Yau Tsim Mong District to thank the public for their support for vaccination. 

Yeung urge the public to encourage their friends and family members to get vaccinated, in particular the elderly and children who are unvaccinated.

"With the concerted efforts from all sectors of the community, the third dose vaccination rate of elderly persons aged 70 or above has risen to slightly above 70 percent. As for young children aged below three, their first dose vaccination rate stays only at 18 percent,” Yeung said.

“I hope that more parents would actively arrange vaccination for their children. We need much more support from the elderly and parents to achieve building a sound protective barrier for Hong Kong,” she added.

Yeung noted that in the fifth wave of the pandemic, nine children aged below 11 who were confirmed to have infected with the COVID-19 virus have passed away.
