Hong Kong logs 3,897 new COVID-19 infections, 10 deaths

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 3,897 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday while 10 more patients passed away, bringing the city’s toll during the fifth wave to 9,903.

In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon, the Centre for Health Protection said the new cases comprised 117 imported infections and 3,780 local cases. Sunday’s figure is lower than the 5,190 cases reported yesterday.

Thirty-nine COVID patients were in critical condition, including 13 receiving intensive care, while 40 were in serious condition, the Hospital Authority said

Those linked to the Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 accounted for 85.5 percent of local cases confirmed from Sept 16 to 22, the CHP said.

It appealed to residents to strictly comply with social distancing measures and refrain from participating in unnecessary or crowded activities or mass gatherings to avoid the spread of the virus.

In a separate statement, the Hospital Authority said a total of 2,066 COVID patients were being treated in hospitals, including 214 new patients.
