Editor’s note: The fifth part of this data series focuses on the city’s role as an international aviation hub.
Experts’ Views
To strengthen Hong Kong’s position as an aviation hub for the Greater Bay Area, the city’s aviation industry should raise its efficiency and provide high quality services, such as improving on-time rate and seat occupancy rate. These improvements will not only promote exchanges between the Chinese mainland and the rest of the world, but also facilitate the flow of people and goods within the bay area. The on-going projects such as the third-runway system and the expansion of the passenger terminals will help HKIA provide more diversified services to passengers.
Algernon Yau Ying-wah, secretary for commerce and economic development
The central government’s support on developing Hong Kong’s aviation industry, highlighted in the 14th Five-year Plan (2021-25), will not only help HKIA achieve greater development, but also provide momentum to Hong Kong’s overall economy. Apart from developing aviation infrastructure, ensuring a sufficient supply of talent is also critical. Airport Authority Hong Kong will continue to train people from various backgrounds through the Hong Kong International Aviation Academy to meet the industry’s needs and to provide opportunities for Hong Kong youth to give full play to their strengths and skills.
