HONG KONG – Health authorities are investigating 40 untraceable Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 infections and it would not be surprising if the number of new daily COVID-19 cases goes "up to four digits again,” a Centre for Health Protection official said Monday.

Albert Au Ka-wing, principal medical and health officer of the CHP’s communicable disease branch, said in a press briefing that there were 737 new cases on Monday, including 104 that were imported.

The new cases included 12 untraceable BA.2.12.1 infections, bringing their total to 40.

“We have been seeing more and more cases from this variant,” Au said, noting that the infectious BA.2.12.1 strain has been found in the city’s various districts.

He said the new BA.2.12.1 cases on Monday were found in Tin Shui Wai, Mong Kok, Tuen Mun, Ma On Shan, and Wong Tai Sin. Three workers at a construction site in Ho Man Tin also got infected.

Au noted that the number of new daily cases has been increasing from 200 to 300 two weeks ago to about 700 to 800 in recent days.

“Undoubtedly, we have seen a rise from 300 to around 800 cases,” Au said, adding that the increase was due to the loosening of social distancing measures.

However, Au also pointed out that the number of deaths, hospitalizations and critical patients have remained stable. There were no new deaths reported for the fourth consecutive day on Monday.
