Taiwan detects Omicron BA.4, BA.5 subvariants

YANGON / HANOI / NEW DELHI  / KUALA LUMPUR / ISLAMABAD / WELLINGTON / SEOUL / TAIPEI -Taiwan has reported five COVID-19 cases infected with BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of Omicron, all of which were imported cases, the island's disease monitoring agency said Monday.

The new cases include four males and one female, who arrived in Taiwan between June 2 and 7, the agency added, warning about the higher infectiousness and immune escape of the two subvariants.

Taiwan reported 45,081 new local COVID-19 cases and 109 deaths on Sunday, according to the agency.

To date, Taiwan has reported 2,937,363 confirmed COVID-19 cases, of which 2,923,844 were local infections.

India

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 43,230,101 on Monday, as 8,084 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the health ministry's latest data.

Besides, 10 deaths from the pandemic registered across the country since Sunday morning took the total death toll to 524,771.

The number of new cases recorded every 24 hours has been on the rise in India over the past few days, leading to stricter COVID-19 guidelines announced by authorities. It was the third consecutive day when the number of new cases crossed the 8,000-mark.

However, the health authorities have ruled out the possibility of yet another COVID-19 wave in the country.

Presently, there are still 47,995 active COVID-19 cases in India with an increase of 3,482 active cases during the past 24 hours.

So far, 42,657,335 people have been successfully cured and discharged from hospitals, of whom 4,592 were discharged during the past 24 hours.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 1,571 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Sunday, bringing the national total to 4,526,298, according to the health ministry.

There is one new imported case, with 1,570 being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Myanmar

Myanmar has fully vaccinated more than 27.2 million people against COVID-19 as of Saturday, according to the Ministry of Health on Sunday.

It said that the country have administered over 63.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and more than 2.2 million people have received booster shots.

Myanmar recorded three new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 613,443 cases, according to its health ministry.

The health authorities tested 5,517 people for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, and the daily positivity rate was 0.05 percent.

It added that the death toll from COVID-19 in the Southeast Asian country remained unchanged at 19,434 with no new deaths reported in the past 24 hours.

The total number of patients who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country reached 592,424 on Sunday including one new recovery.

New Zealand

New Zealand recorded 4,413 new community cases of COVID-19, the Ministry of Health said on Monday.

Among the new community infections, 1,312 were reported in the largest city Auckland, the ministry said.

In addition, 68 new cases of COVID-19 were detected at the New Zealand border.

Currently, 352 COVID-19 patients are being treated in New Zealand hospitals, including nine in intensive care units or high dependency units.

New Zealand has reported 1,236,398 confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic hit the country in early 2020.

Pakistan

Pakistan reported 94 new COVID-19 cases during the past 24 hours, the country's ministry of health said on Monday.

The tally of infected people increased to 1,531,273 after adding the new cases, according to the data released by the ministry.

A total of 30,381 people died from COVID-19 in Pakistan, with no more deaths recorded on Sunday, according to the ministry's statistics.

On Sunday, 11,934 tests for COVID-19 were conducted in Pakistan while the positivity rate stood at 0.79 percent.

Currently, there are 50 active cases that are in critical condition in the South Asian country.

The Republic of Korea

The Republic of Korea reported 3,828 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 18,229,288, the health authorities said Monday.

Vietnam

Vietnam recorded 568 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, down 142 from Saturday, according to the Ministry of Health.

All the new infections were domestically transmitted in 34 provinces and cities.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the pandemic hotspot with 170 new cases recorded on Sunday, followed by the northern Yen Bai province with 64 cases and the northern Quang Ninh province with 25 cases.

The infections brought the total tally to 10,731,812 with 43,083 deaths. Nationwide, as many as 9,553,193 COVID-19 patients, or over 89 percent of the infections, have so far recovered.

Over 222.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including more than 200.7 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.
