HONG KONG - The Commissioner’s Office of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has firmly rejected statements about Hong Kong released before June 4 by some US officials, urging them to make self-reflection and do away with political tricks.

In a statement released on Saturday, a spokesperson for the office condemned the recent remarks by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and some US Congress agencies as political show that interfered in China’s internal affairs under the guise of human rights and freedom. They smeared Hong Kong’s human rights and rule of law in an attempt to incite hostility and confrontation and tarnish China’s image, the statement read.

“We urge the (US) politicians to make self-reflection and do away with political tricks,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that today’s China is marching on a new journey towards the second centenary goal of building a modern socialist country in all respects, and today’s Hong Kong is further transitioning from chaos to stability and opening a new chapter of sound governance.

A few Western countries still try to use the political incident that happened three decades ago for ideological infiltration and peaceful evolution against China. The move is doomed to be a complete failure given the current historical trend and the development of the Chinese nation.

No political performance of any external forces can stop the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation or change the bright prospects of Hong Kong’s prosperity and development, the spokesperson added.

“A few Western countries still try to use the political incident that happened three decades ago for ideological infiltration and peaceful evolution against China. The move is doomed to be a complete failure given the current historical trend and the development of the Chinese nation,” the according to the statement.

The spokesperson pointed out that democratic systems and practices in some western countries are fraught with deep-seated problems. In these countries, money politics has been a new normal, political polarization has intensified, and freedom of speech exists in name only.

“The US has an awful human rights track record and appalling governance deficiencies — the death of George Floyd, frequent school shootings, the Capitol Hill riot, and over one million COVID-19 fatalities, to name a few,” the spokesperson said.

The US, who fails to protect the basic right to life of its own citizens, has no right to point a finger at China or slander Hong Kong, added the spokesperson.

The spokesperson stressed that Chinese people do not provoke, and will not flinch from provocations either.

“We have sufficient strengths, willpower and measures to resolutely safeguard China’s sovereignty, security and development interests.”

The office urged the American politicians to respect China’s sovereignty, abide by the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and Hong Kong affairs.

“Acts of intervention and sabotage will fall flat time and again no matter how hard they try, and the 1.4 billion Chinese people will stand up against them,” the spokesperson added.
