Signature events to mark HKSAR’s 25th anniversary

HONG KONG – The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will host a number of cultural, recreational and sports programs in the city from May to the end of this year to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series is among initiatives exclusively supported by the Hong Kong Jockey Club's approved donation of HK$630 million ($80.2 million) to the government for the anniversary, the government said on Monday.

Various HKJC Series and exhibitions will be staged in the LCSD museums starting this month. They include The Big Eight - Dinosaur Revelation, which showcases precious dinosaur fossil skeletons, and Dunhuang: Enchanting Tales for Millennium, which features arts and culture of the Dunhuang grottoes.

Residents will be able to explore the world of Chinese landscape paintings through modern technology in Mastering Masterpieces: The Essentials of Chinese Landscape Paintings, and understand feminine characteristics and daily lives in ancient China in Women and Femininity in Ancient China: Treasures from the Nanjing Museum.

The LCSD will also work with K11 Group, Kerry Group and Sino Group to present the project Art@Harbour and set up multiple outdoor art installations and a digital art facade along the promenades of Victoria Harbour.

Meanwhile, the LCSD department will bring audiences a wide range of performing arts programs, such as a concert screening of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Cantonese opera programs, Hong Kong Ballet's classical fairy tale Cinderella, art-tech programs under the International Arts Carnival.

This year also marks the 60th anniversary of Hong Kong City Hall. The hall will organize various celebration activities with the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the Hong Kong Public Libraries to showcase the cultural achievements of the government over the past six decades.

Apart from enjoying cultural events, residents can participate in the recreational activity Blossom Around Town by carrying out beautification works at 48 prominent locations and parks from June to October to enhance the landscape across the city.

The LCSD will also organize a series of Happy@Parks activities from June to December to allow residents to join a variety of recreational games during holidays in the department’s parks.

To encourage people of all ages to form the habit of exercising, the LCSD will hold the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR - Free Use of Leisure Facilities on July 1, where most of the fee-charging leisure facilities under the department will be open for free use.

The department will also organize roving sports demonstrations to be held in shopping malls or performance venues on weekends in June and July to promote the benefits of regular exercise.

It has also has invited an illustrator to design a board game with the theme of celebration activities, and adapt the board game to a floor sticker to be displayed at nine LCSD leisure and cultural venues starting from mid-June for public enjoyment.
