HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported one new imported COVID-19 case on Tuesday as the government announced that elderly residents can get vaccinated without booking an appointment starting July 29 after it set a walk-in quota for them.

In a statement, the Centre for Health Protection said new patient was a 37-year-old man who traveled to Spain and Switzerland from July 3 to Sunday, when he developed symptoms. The city’s tally stood at 11,979.

The HKSAR government said it has set a daily walk-in quota of 4,600 for elderly people aged 70 or above at vaccination centers

The CHP added that a total of 27 cases were reported from July 13 to Monday and all of them are imported cases.

Meanwhile, the government said it has set a daily walk-in quota of 4,600 for elderly people aged 70 or above at vaccination centers.

Those eligible can drop by at 24 of the city’s community inoculation centers to take the jab starting Thursday, the government said.

Most centers will distribute 200 walk-in tickets per day while the ones in Tung Chung and at the Hong Kong International Airport will each distribute 100 tickets every day.

The tickets will be distributed from 7:45 am and people who secure their spots will get the time slot for their jab during the day.

Senior citizens can be accompanied by two caretakers, who can also get their shots. They will be notified of the date for their second dose.

The government said the walk-in service may be expanded to cover people aged 60 or above if it turns out to be popular.

Meanwhile, people in Hong Kong can register vaccine shots for up to four weeks before they take their shot starting Wednesday. Currently, they have to take their jabs within three weeks of registration.
