HK sees 1 new COVID-19 infection, probes case from Italy

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported one imported COVID-19 infection on Wednesday, pushing the city’s tally of confirmed cases to 11,827.

In a statement on Wednesday afternoon, the Centre for Health Protection said the imported case involved a 28-year-old man from India. He showed no symptoms of the virus.

The CHP said it was also investigating a 43-year-old male patient who arrived in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on April 22 from Italy and had gone on to the Chinese mainland, where he tested positive for COVID-19. 

According to the patient, he initially tested positive for the virus in Italy in late February. He underwent hotel quarantine in Ramada Hong Kong Harbour View from April 22 to May 12.

He then stayed in Harbour Plaza Resort City from May 13 to 16 before taking flight CX368 to Shanghai on May 16.  

The CHP was notified on May 18 by Shanghai health authorities that the patient was confirmed COVID-19 positive on May 17. The CHP said it is conducting epidemiological investigations and contact tracing.

A total of 36 cases were reported in the past 14 days, including eight local cases, one of which one was untraceable, the CHP added.
