9 local cases in Xinjiang among 25 new infections on mainland

BEIJING/URUMQI/SHANGHAI - Chinese health authorities said Wednesday that they received reports of 25 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Tuesday, including 16 imported cases and nine locally transmitted ones.

All of new local cases were reported in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, the National Health Commission said in its daily report. The fresh infections were posted in the regional capital Urumqi, according to the local health authorities.

Sixteen out of the 25 fresh infections were imported cases while the other nine were local infections reported in Xinjiang's Urumqi, according to health authorities

Six new imported cases were reported in Guangdong, four in Shanghai, and one case each in Inner Mongolia, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Sichuan, and Shaanxi, the commission said.

For the new cases in Shanghai, three of them involve Chinese nationals, of whom two flew in from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) while other flew in from Singapore. The fourth person involves a Japanese national arriving from Japan.

No deaths related to the disease were reported, the commission said, adding that one new suspected imported case was reported in Shanghai.

Another 58 COVID-19 patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery, the commission said, adding that there were 761 patients still being treated, with 40 in severe condition.

By the end of Tuesday, a total of 2,216 imported cases had been reported on the mainland. Out of those cases, 2,058 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery while 158 remained hospitalized, with one in serious condition. No deaths from imported cases had been reported.

Overall, a total of 84,737 confirmed cases had been reported on the mainland, including 79,342 recoveries and 4,634 deaths.

There were still three suspected cases on the mainland, the commission said.

According to the commission, there were 23,039 close contacts still under medical observation after 1,385 more were released from observation.

Twenty new asymptomatic cases, including eight in Urumqi and 12 from outside the mainland, were reported while two asymptomatic cases were re-categorized as confirmed ones.

The commission said 288 asymptomatic cases, including 141 from outside the mainland, were still under medical observation. 

By Tuesday, 4,181 confirmed cases, including 58 deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 46 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 480, including seven deaths, in Taiwan.

A total of 3,052 COVID-19 patients in the Hong Kong SAR, 46 in the Macao SAR, and 443 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
