CBA: Fujian capture 5th victory, Tianjin continue winless streak

QINGDAO - The Fujian Sturgeons extended their winning streak to five games with a 123-111 victory over the Guangzhou Loong Lions in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league here on Saturday, while the Tianjin Pioneers are still winless after the league's restart with a loss to the Nanjing Monkey Kings 116-107.

Ty Lawson contributed 15 points, including two three-pointers and nine free throws out of ten, to fuel Fujian to lead 34-16 as the first quarter ended. He and center Wang Zhelin combined for 19 points in the following quarter to earn a 24-point advantage for Fujian.

The Sturgeons maintained a lead of some 20 points in the third quarter, with forward Chen Linjian hitting three 3-pointers.

After pouring in several three-pointers, Guangzhou cut the deficit to eight points with one minute on the clock, but Wang and Lawson stayed solid on the free throw line to score four points to seal Fujian's victory.

Lawson finished a triple-double of 35 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. Wang also scored 35 points along with 14 rebounds.

Marcus Hunt led Guangdong's charge with 27 points. Zheng Zhun and Jia Mingru each got 19 points, while Chen Yingjun collected 14 points.

Joseph Young became the hero for injury-hit Nanjing in their win over Tianjin, as he collected a triple-double with 51 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

Nanjing had only eight players available on the roster. They had called up Feng Xin and Yu Changchun, but the duo have to take COVID-19 tests before joining the team.

Tianjin dominated in the first quarter en route to an 18-9 lead after Jin Xin made a 3-pointer.

Nanjing found their way back in the second quarter, and Li Shengdong's layup made it 58-57 at halftime.

Nanjing rode an 8-0 run at the end of the third quarter to increase the gap to over 10 points before bagging the win.

Li Borun scored 18 points while Li Hongpeng added 16 points for Nanjing.

Tianjin suffered its 10th straight defeat since the league resumed on June 20. Shi Deshuai contributed 26 points, leading five players in double-digit points.

Fujian's win was made sweeter when Shenzhen Aviators fell 81-74 to the Qingdao Eagles in a later match.

Shenzhen, trailing by as many as 20-plus points, narrowed the gap to six points with 2:33 left through their full-court press.

However, Zhang Chengyu stepped up to score six points in a row and Qingdao withstood their opponents' late resistance.

Zhang scored a game-high 18 points. Lin Wei-Han added 15 points for Qingdao. Yang Linyi led Shenzhen players with 17 points.

As the top 12 outfits advance to the playoffs, Qingdao sits 11th with a win-loss record of 21-18, followed by Fujian at 21-19. Both sides have won three more matches than the 13th-ranked Shenzhen.

Also on Saturday, the Zhejiang Lions handed the Sichuan Blue Whales their sixth consecutive defeat 91-76, and the Liaoning Flying Leopards crushed the Shandong Heroes 123-98.
