BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed mixed on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.33 percent, at 2,846.22 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.27 percent lower at 10,653.49 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 578.29 billion yuan (about US$81.11 billion), expanding from 573.19 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers 816 to 620 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,396 to 735 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the liquor and rare earth industries posted strong performance, while companies in the sectors of dairy and food processing led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.80 percent to close at 2,054.96 points.
