BEIJING - Chinese stocks closed lower Friday as market sentiment remained cautious over the global spread of the novel coronavirus.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index went down 0.6 percent to end at 2,763.99 points, and the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.68 percent lower at 10,110.11 points.

Combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 572.6 billion yuan (about US$80.6 billion), shrinking from 597.73 billion yuan registered in the previous trading day.

After across-the-board drops Thursday, stocks in plantation and breeding industries rebounded, with shares of Jinjian Cereals Industry Co Ltd surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end the day at 9.87 yuan apiece.

Companies in semiconductor and cloud computing led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.54 percent to close at 1,906.67 points Friday.
