Rioters show contempt for human decency

In further evidence of anti-government rioters’ flagrant contempt for Hong Kong’s cherished rule of law, a large group of rioters suddenly surrounded and beat up two police community liaison officers with wooden sticks, bricks and other weapons. This occurred when the pair was liaising with the organizer of Sunday’s rally at Chater Garden, Central.

The unprovoked attack, with potentially lethal weapons, on unarmed officers who were there to discuss the safety of participants, is not only an illegal act but one that demonstrates their total lack of respect for human decency.

Some of the rioters arrested at the scene during clashes with police carried blunt objects in their backpacks that could be used as weapons. Apparently, they were prepared to cause bodily harm to anyone they disliked — particularly police officers.

The radicals have been preaching social values such as “freedom”, “human rights” and “democracy” in peddling their political ideas. But their cruel attack on innocent, unarmed police officers and their gross contempt for the law show not a shred of these values.

Although the number of violent protests has fallen noticeably since the District Council elections in November and especially after the Christmas and New Year holidays, Sunday’s renewed violence suggests the radicals are apparently not ready to quit their violent campaign. They are still determined to exploit any opportunity to promote their illegal political objectives that are clearly divorced from reality.

The so-called moderates in the opposition camp are likely to continue to collaborate with rioters in their desperate attempt to perpetuate their anti-government campaign, whose momentum is clearly diminishing after thousands of radicals were arrested for various offenses. It is conceivable that public assemblies or demonstrations will continue to be held under different excuses or themes, with the purpose of providing a platform for the black-clad rioters to launch their violent rampages.

The skirmishes on Sunday prove the masterminds behind the violent campaign over the past seven months have not yet stopped abusing Hong Kong society; it is not yet time for the public to relax. That the violent attack happened less than a week before the Lunar New Year holiday can be seen as a sign that violent attacks may resurface during the most important public holidays of the year. Residents need to be on guard against violent activities during these times traditionally reserved for family reunions and celebrations, and also should support the Hong Kong Police Force in doing its job in effectively maintaining peace and public order.
