The University of Hong Kong recently signed an agreement with Shenzhen’s Futian district that will establish a campus in the city — a move that is expected to further promote higher education cooperation in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Higher education cooperation in the Greater Bay Area has gained steam in recent years, with a number of Hong Kong universities setting up branches or campuses across the border

The soon-to-be-constructed campus will be affiliated with the HKU Business School, which was founded in 2001 and has since become one of the leading business schools in Asia. Construction is scheduled to be complete in early 2022.

The new campus, which will cover an area of over 10,000 square meters, will provide a place for HKU staff and alumni to carry out education, research and entrepreneurial activities.

The core idea of the construction plan is “one university, two campuses”, which will allow professors and students to move freely between the campuses, HKU Vice-President Max Shen Zuojun said in a previous interview in the university’s internal publication.

Shen said HKU has been struggling with a shortage of space for development. He said that if the university could get more resources and build more labs by cooperating with mainland local governments in the Greater Bay Area, that would greatly help with HKU’s research work and attract more talent.

Higher education cooperation in the Greater Bay Area has gained steam in recent years, with a number of Hong Kong universities setting up branches or campuses across the border.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and the Shenzhen and Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College in Zhuhai have been operating for years. In the works are the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, the City University of Hong Kong in Dongguan, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Foshan, The Open University of Hong Kong in Zhaoqing, and several others.

The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, officially launched in February 2019, made clear the goal to support higher education institutions from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in their aim to establish jointly run education institutions.

The joint development of academic programs, labs and research centers in fields where they have a competitive edge is also encouraged, the document said.
